strossersn.

Forms:

α. (In plural form) 1500s strasers, 1500s strocers, 1600s strossers.

β. (In singular form) 1600s strosser.

Origin: Probably a variant or alteration of another lexical item. Etymon: trousers n.
Etymology: Probably a variant or alteration of trousers n. (although this is first attested later); compare the form trossers at trousers n. α. forms and the discussion at that entry. The motivation for the initial s- is unclear, but compare strouses n. for a similar development. In some 18th- and 19th-cent. editions strait strossers in quot. a1616 is modernized to read straight trossers.
Obsolete.
With plural agreement. Breeches; trews (trews n. 1).Also occasionally in singular ( strosser) in the same sense. In quot. a1616, in your strait strossers is usually interpreted by modern editors as a bawdy play on the idea of wearing the skintight breeches or trews associated with Irish soldiers (cf. kern n.1 1a), with the implied meaning ‘with bare legs, naked (from the waist down)’. For an analogous association of tight-fitting garments and nakedness from the period, see buff n.2 2 and 3 for the development of the phrase in the buff.
