Origin: A borrowing from Latin, combined with an English element. Etymons: Latin stūpeus , -ous suffix.
Etymology: < classical Latin stūpeus, stuppeus made or consisting of tow ( < stuppa stupe n.1 + -eus : see -eous suffix) + -ous suffix. Compare earlier stupose adj. In sense 2 probably after scientific Latin stuppeus in similar use (1847 or earlier).
1. Entomology. Of a part of an insect: covered with long scales. Obsolete. rare.
