Origin: Either (i) a borrowing from French. Or (ii) a borrowing from Latin. Etymons: French stupide; Latin stupidus.
Etymology: < (i) Anglo-Norman and Middle French, French stupide paralysed (late 14th cent.), stupefied, dazed (late 15th cent.), foolish, unintelligent (1535 in the passage translated in quot. ?1541; 1666 as noun in sense ‘foolish person’), absurd, senseless (1654), or its etymon (ii) classical Latin stupidus dazed, numbed, stunned, foolish, dull-witted, in post-classical Latin also sterile (early 3rd cent. in Tertullian) < stupēre to be or become dazed, stunned, speechless (see stupent adj.).Compare Spanish estúpido (late 15th cent.), Portuguese estúpido (16th cent.), Italian stupido (13th cent.). With stupid to at sense A. 2c, compare French stupide à (1608 or earlier).
A. adj.
1.
a. Of a person: slow to learn or understand; lacking intelligence or perceptiveness; acting without common sense or good judgement. In later use also as a more general term of abuse. The use in quot. ?1541 is apparently an English adjective, with a plural ending showing influence from the French original.
