单词 bog-standard
释义

bog-standardadj.

Brit. /ˌbɒɡˈstandəd/, U.S. /ˌbɔɡˈstændərd/, /ˌbɑɡˈstændərd/
Origin: Of uncertain origin. Perhaps a variant or alteration of another lexical item. Etymon: English boxed standard.
Etymology: Origin uncertain; perhaps an alteration or misapprehension of boxed standard (see note; < boxed adj. + standard adj.), after bog n.4 Compare earlier (probably unrelated) box standard n., and later box-standard adj.The (non-fixed) collocation boxed standard is attested in use in advertising and commercial contexts chiefly for engineering products, e.g.:1931 Daily Mail 1 July (5th ed.) 1/7 (advt.) High Class Soap... Unboxed—Slightly damaged in manufacture—but guaranteed same high standard of quality as ‘boxed standard lines’.1932 Domest. Engin. 23 Jan. 99/2 (advt.) Insist upon Hammond boxed Standard Brass Gate Valves and Compression Stop and Waste Valves from your jobber.1949 Motor 27 July 52/2 (advt.) Also boxed standard Champion 18 and 14 mm. sparking plugs. Devon Marine, Kingswear.1974 Austin (Minnesota) Daily Herald 5 Nov. 24/1 (advt.) Regular $5.99 4-pc. Boxed Standard or Phillips Screwdrivers. It is sometimes suggested that bog-standard originated as a mishearing or misunderstanding of box-standard adj., but the chronology does not support this, and in fact the latter may be a later rationalization of the former. Other less likely alternative suggestions include derivation < bog n.4 + standard n. in alleged BBC slang of the 1950s and 1960s for the rival commercial company ATV (Associated Television), punning on the name of its director, Lew Grade (as if loo n.4 and grade n.), or (on the assumption that the original application was to motorcycles) < bog-wheel , former Cambridge University slang for a bicycle, in which the first element is also apparently bog n.4 (see P. Beale Conc. Dict. Slang (1989) 47/2, 48/1), or < an (otherwise unattested) acronym BoG from the initial letters of British or German, with allusion to the former dominance of British and German engineering.
colloquial (chiefly British).
Ordinary, basic, standard; without extra features or modification; (hence depreciative) unexceptional or uninspired. Cf. box-standard adj.Apparently originally motoring and engineering slang.
