Used attributively to designate stringed instruments (chiefly of the violin class) having an aluminium plate and horn attachment in place of a wooden body, formerly used for recording purposes.

1979 Oxf. Jun. Compan. Mus. (ed. 2) 314/1 Stroh violin, a violin that has an aluminium plate and a trumpet bell instead of the normal wooden body. Invented in 1901 by Charles Stroh for use in the early recording studios, where primitive microphones could only pick up sound aimed directly at them (which..the trumpet bell could do). There are also Stroh violas, cellos, mandolins, and guitars.
