单词 sub-lieutenant
释义

sub-lieutenantn.

Brit. /ˌsʌb lɛfˈtɛnənt/, U.S. /ˈˌsəb ˌluˈtɛnənt/
Origin: Formed within English, by derivation; modelled on a French lexical item. Etymons: sub- prefix, lieutenant n.
Etymology: < sub- prefix + lieutenant n., after French sous-lieutenant (1479 in Middle French denoting an administrative official, 1641 (as †soubz lieutenans, plural) denoting an army officer, 1791 or earlier denoting a navy officer). Compare Spanish subteniente (c1550 in sense ‘deputy’, 1747 denoting an army officer ranking immediately below a lieutenant), Italian sottotenente (1682 or earlier; after French), post-classical Latin sublocumtenens (1587 in a British source; probably after French).
1. An army officer ranking immediately below a lieutenant, typically the most junior commissioned officer; the rank held by such an officer. Now chiefly historical. In the British Army, the rank of sub-lieutenant was formerly used in certain infantry regiments in place of that of ensign. Along with ensign and the equivalent cavalry rank of cornet, it was officially replaced by second lieutenant in 1871, but continued to be used informally to designate this rank.
