Etymology: Perhaps < German stollen (Old High German stollo , Middle High German stolle ) a support, prop. The word has been adopted in a different sense as stulm n.
Mining.
A platform or framework of timber covered with boards to support workmen or to carry ore or rubbish; also, a framework of boards to protect miners from falling stones.
