单词 subclavian
释义

subclavianadj.n.

Brit. /ˌsʌbˈkleɪvɪən/, U.S. /ˌsəbˈkleɪviən/
Forms: 1600s subclauian, 1600s– subclavian.
Origin: A borrowing from Latin, combined with an English element. Etymons: Latin subclavius , -an suffix.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin subclavius (see subclavia n. and subclavius n.) + -an suffix. Compare French sousclavier (16th cent. in Middle French as adjective). In sense A. 2 perhaps an independent formation < classical Latin sub sub prep. + clāvis key (see clavis n.) + -an suffix, but more likely an etymologically motivated reinterpretation of the existing word.
