Origin: A borrowing from Latin, combined with an English element; perhaps modelled on a French lexical item, or perhaps modelled on a Latin lexical item. Etymons: Latin acētābulum , -iferous comb. form.
Etymology: < classical Latin acētābulum acetabulum n. + -iferous comb. form, after either French acétabulifère (1839 or earlier) or scientific Latin Acetabulifera (1836 or earlier).
Zoology. Now rare.
Bearing cup-shaped structures or acetabula; spec. bearing suckers; (of a cephalopod mollusc) belonging to a former division Acetabulifera, characterized by tentacles with suckers.
