Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from Latin. Partly a borrowing from Greek. Etymons: Latin stratiōticus; Greek στρατιωτικός.
Etymology: < (i) classical Latin stratiōticus of or characteristic of a soldier, and its etymon (ii) ancient Greek στρατιωτικός military, warlike < στρατιώτης stratiote n. + -ικός -ic suffix.Compare earlier use in a work title:1579 L. Digges (title) An arithmeticall militare treatise, named Stratioticos compendiously teaching the science of numbers, as well in fractions as integers, and so much of the rules and aequations algebraicall and arte of numbers cossicall, as are requisite for the profession of a soldiour.
Chiefly Ancient Greek History. rare before late 19th cent.
Of or relating to war; military; (in modern use) spec. designating a fund established in Athens for the purpose of financing military expenditure.
