Etymology: < ancient Greek στρατιώτης soldier < στρατιά army ( < στρατός army (see stratocracy n.) + -ιά , suffix forming collective nouns) + -ώτης -ote suffix.Compare post-classical Latin stratiotes soldier (a1542).
1. A name for: one of the elected officers in James Harrington's idealized commonwealth of Oceana. Obsolete.Apparently an isolated use.
