Etymology: < post-classical Latin Studites (1557 or earlier; Byzantine Greek Στουδίτης ), said to be < the name of its founder Studius (Byzantine Greek Στουδιός ) + classical Latin -ītēs -ite suffix¹. Compare Middle French, French Studite (1564 or earlier).
