Origin: Either (i) formed within English, by derivation. Or (ii) a borrowing from Latin, combined with an English element. Etymons: stratum n., -culum suffix, -ate suffix2; Latin straticulum , -ate suffix2.
Etymology: Either (i) < stratum n. + -culum suffix + -ate suffix2 (compare -i- connective, and e.g. articulate adj., reticulate adj.), or (ii) < post-classical Latin straticulum thin layer (1867 or earlier in a German geological work, or earlier; < classical Latin strātum stratum n. + -culum -culum suffix) + -ate suffix2.
Chiefly Geology and Mineralogy.
Arranged in, or consisting of, thin layers or laminae; finely layered.
