单词 acerose
释义

aceroseadj.

Brit. /ˈasərəʊs/, /ˈasərəʊz/, U.S. /ˈæsəˌroʊs/, /ˈæsəˌroʊz/
Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin acerōsus.
Etymology: < classical Latin acerōsus full of or mixed with chaff < acer- , acus chaff ( < the same Indo-European base as ear n.2) + -ōsus -ose suffix1. In sense 2 after scientific Latin acerosus ( Linnaeus Philosophia botanica (1751) iii. 42), which apparently arose from association of the Latin word with either acus needle (u- stem: see acicula n.) or ācer sharp (see acrid adj.). Compare acerote adj. N.E.D. (1884) gives the pronunciation as (æ:sĕrōu·s) /ˌæsəˈrəʊs/.
