Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin Stevia.
Etymology: < scientific Latin Stevia, genus name (A. J. Cavanilles Icones et Descriptiones Plantarum (1797) IV. 32) < Steve or Stevis , Latinized version of the surname of Pedro Jaime Esteve (1500–66), Spanish physician and botanist + scientific Latin -ia -ia suffix1.
A genus of herbaceous and shrubby perennial plants of the family Compositae, native to tropical and subtropical America; (also stevia) a plant of this genus, esp. the shrub Stevia rebaudiana, whose leaves (or the very sweet-tasting glycosides they contain) may be used as a substitute for sugar or artificial sweeteners.
