Boot & Shoe Manuf. xxx. 258 The ‘veldtschoen’, or ‘stitchdown’, has passed through so many stages that no description of it would correctly describe its production in all factories. The principal idea is that the edge of the upper (except just around the heel) shall be turned outward instead of being folded over the edge of an insole, and that this projecting flap shall be attached to the sole with a vertical thread seam.
1940 Chambers's Techn. Dict. 888/2 Veldtschoen,..a sandal-like form of shoe in which the upper is attached directly to the sole by a row of stitches near the edge. Also called stitchdown shoes.
1969 T. C. Thorstensen Pract. Leather Technol. xv. 248 The stitchdown shoe differs from the Littleway in that the insole is fastened to the upper by flairing the upper outward rather than inward.
