Words II. 297 One of the old jokes practised on the 1st of April is the sending a raw lad to a saddler's or cobler's for a ‘penn'orth of stirrup-oil,’ when he is termed an April fool, and his ignorance enlightened by the application of a stirrup-leather across his shoulders.
