Origin: Formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: blue adj., fin n.1
Etymology: < blue adj. + fin n.1 In sense 1 after scientific Latin cyanopterus (1802 as the specific name of this fish). In sense 2 probably after scientific Latin nigripinnis (compare quot. 1878 at sense 2), lit. ‘black fin’ (compare blackfin n. at black adj. and n. Compounds 1e(c)).
1. A drum fish, Umbrina cirrosa (family Sciaenidae), of inshore waters around southern Europe and North Africa. Obsolete. rare.

2. More fully bluefin whitefish. Any of several North American freshwater whitefish or ciscoes of the genus Coregonus, spec. C. nigripinnis, with dark fins, which was formerly abundant in the Great Lakes but is now believed to be extinct. Now rare.
