Origin: A borrowing from Italian. Etymon: Italian addio.
Etymology: < Italian addio (a1348; 1336 as a Dio ) < a to + Dio God (end of the 12th cent.; < classical Latin Deus : see deus int.). Compare earlier adieu int. and later adios int.
Esp. in Italy or in Italian contexts: used as an expression of farewell. Also as n.: a parting salutation. Cf. ciao int.
