Origin: A borrowing from Russian. Etymon: Russian starec.
Etymology: < Russian starec venerable old man, elder, monk, spiritual leader (11th cent. in Old Russian) < the base of Russian staryj old + -ec , suffix forming nouns. Compare Old Church Slavonic starĭtsĭ , an honorific used of monks, perhaps after the corresponding Byzantine Greek use of ancient Greek γέρων (see gerontology n.).In plural form startsy after the Russian plural form starcy.
Russian Orthodox Church.
A man, typically a monk, who is regarded as having spiritual authority, and is hence often sought out as a counsellor or guide, despite his holding no formal position in the ecclesiastical hierarchy. Also in extended use.
