A translucent gelatinous mass found on the ground, vegetation, etc., formerly believed to be an emanation from the stars, the remains of meteors, or of fungal or animal origin, but now generally identified as colonies of the cyanobacteria Nostoc (see nostoc n.).Also called star-shot (see star shot n. 1).
