Etymology: < classical Latin statēra kind of balance, steelyard (probably < ancient Greek στατῆρα , accusative of στατήρ stater n.1, in the unrecorded (but etymologically probable) sense of ‘balance’), in early use partly via Italian stadera, †statera (1321). Compare Old French, Middle French estatere (13th cent.), Middle French statere (15th cent.; French statère).

A scale or balance consisting of a lever with arms of unequal length, which moves on a fulcrum; = steelyard n.2After 18th cent., chiefly with reference to ancient Roman devices; cf. Roman balance n. at Roman n.1 and adj.1 Compounds 4.
