Forms: 1500s–1600s standell, 1500s–1800s standil (historical in later use), 1500s– standill (now historical), 1600s–1700s standle, 1600s– standel, 1700s standal, 1700s standall.
Origin: Probably a variant or alteration of another lexical item. Etymons: staddle n.; standard n.
Etymology: Probably either (i) an alteration of staddle n. (compare staddle n. 2), after stand v., or (ii) an alteration of standard n. (compare standard n. 13a), after staddle n. Compare slightly later stander n. 3.
A tree, esp. a timber tree, left standing where others have been coppiced, cleared, etc. Also figurative. Cf. stander n. 3 and standard n. 13a. Now rare (chiefly English regional (south-western) in later use).Quot. 1996 is an isolated example in poetic use.
