(a) The condition or fact of being engaged in armed conflict with another nation, territory, faction, etc. (b) A state of mutually acknowledged hostility between nations which is introduced by a formal declaration of war (and is now usually governed by international conventions on war) but is not necessarily characterized by armed conflict.
