(a) a unit of pressure, equal to 760 mm of mercury or 101,325 Pa (symbol atm); (b) any of various simple models of the atmosphere having a defined surface temperature and pressure and a specified profile of temperature with altitude, used esp. in aeronautics and astronautics.The unit and the models approximate to typical observed atmospheric conditions.
