Etymology: < St Lucia, the name of an island and (subsequently) a country in the Lesser Antilles (Windward Islands) + -an suffix.The European name of the island is first recorded in Spanish as Santa Lucía (1519 or earlier); it appears in English contexts in the second half of the 16th cent. (1578 as Santa Lucia in a translation of the Spanish source of 1519, or earlier). Compare French Sainte-Lucie (mid 17th cent. or earlier). From the 17th cent., European settlers from France and Britain tried to gain control of the island; after 1814, it remained British until it gained independence in 1979. French and French Creole are still spoken in St Lucia.
