Origin: Formed within English, as an initialism.
Etymology: Initialism < the initial letters of either solid state disk or solid state drive.
Computing.
A storage device in which data is stored by means of solid state memory chips; (subsequently) esp. one incorporating non-volatile flash memory, used in place of a hard drive in a PC.SSDs have no moving parts and so can be read from and written to more quickly than electromechanical hard drives.
