Etymology: < German SS (1928 or earlier as S.S.), initialism < the initial letters of the elements of Schutzstaffel Schutzstaffel n. Compare slightly earlier Schutzstaffel n., and also Waffen SS n.The organization was originally called Schutzkommando , literally ‘protection command’, then Sturmstaffel , literally ‘storm squadron’, before acquiring its final name (in the late summer of 1925). In Nazi Germany the initialism was frequently written using a double form of the rune corresponding to the letter S , known as the Siegrune and taken at the time to symbolize German Sieg victory (see siȝe n.).

The internal security force of the Nazis in Germany; = Schutzstaffel n.The organization was formed in 1925 as Hitler's personal security force. After the Nazis' rise to power the organization was tasked with law enforcement, notably with running concentration camps; in this function its members later became the chief perpetrators of the Holocaust. It was also envisaged as an elite of the Nazi Party. Later it developed a combat arm, the Waffen SS (see Waffen SS n.).
