Etymology: < bottle n.3 + imp n.1In quot. 1823 at sense 1 translating German Galgenmännlein, lit. ‘gallows imp’ (1810 or earlier in this sense, in the title of a short story by F. de la Motte Fouqué); in the story the imp lives in a bottle.
