Etymology: Origin uncertain. Perhaps (i) < spruik v. + -er suffix1 (although the verb is first attested slightly later), or perhaps (ii) an alteration of speaker n., after German Sprüche (plural) claims, patter (see spruik n.). Compare later spruik n.
Australian and New Zealand slang.
A public speaker; spec. a person employed to attract custom to a show, a shop, etc.; a barker.
