单词 start naked
释义

start nakedadj.

Brit. /ˌstɑːt ˈneɪkᵻd/, U.S. /ˌstɑrt ˈneɪkəd/, South African English /ˌstɑːt ˈneɪkəd/
Forms:

α. early Middle English steort naked, early Middle English steort naket, early Middle English stert naked, Middle English 1600s– start naked, 1900s– staa't nakid (U.S. regional (southern), chiefly in African-American usage), 1900s– start necked (U.S. regional (southern)).

β. early Middle English steor naked, Middle English star naked.

Origin: Apparently formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: start n.1, naked adj.
Etymology: Apparently < start n.1 + naked adj. Compare later stark naked adj.The literal sense is apparently ‘naked to the tail’, perhaps with reference to the buttocks (compare tail n.1 5), although start n.1 is not otherwise recorded in English in this sense. In later use apparently sometimes reinterpreted as a variant of stark naked adj. and perceived as a phrase rather than a compound. Compare the longer expressions such as †start bodily naked and also start-mother-naked , in U.S. regional English (both 19th cent.), which are reminiscent of the three-part expressions at stark adv. 2b (although the middle element is of a different type). Surv. Eng. Dial. records the word from Cheshire, Hertfordshire, and Buckinghamshire. The β. forms probably show transmission errors. The form steor naked appears as a manuscript variant of steort naked. The form star naked in quot. c13301 could alternatively be interpreted as a variant of or error for stark naked adj., although this is otherwise unattested before the late 14th cent. Compare also the later alterations English regional (chiefly East Anglian) and U.S. regional (Pennsylvania) star naked (1847), and English regional (Suffolk) star-bone naked (20th cent.).
Now chiefly U.S. regional (southern and south Midland) and South African.
