Etymology: Apparently < start n.¹ + naked adj. Compare later stark naked adj.The literal sense is apparently ‘naked to the tail’, perhaps with reference to the buttocks (compare tail n.¹ 5), although start n.¹ is not otherwise recorded in English in this sense. In later use apparently sometimes reinterpreted as a variant of stark naked adj. and perceived as a phrase rather than a compound.
