bolon.4

Brit. /ˈbəʊləʊ/, U.S. /ˈboʊloʊ/
Forms: 1900s– bola, 1900s– bolo.
Origin: Probably a borrowing from Spanish. Etymon: Spanish bola.
Etymology: Probably ultimately < Spanish bola ball (see bolas n.) by association either with bolas n. or with South American Spanish boleadoras bolas, also kind of lasso weighted with balls and used by cattle herders (1755 or earlier), the semantic connection being the metal tips at the end of the cords of the necktie. The form bolo shows alteration after Spanish -o, masculine singular ending. Compare Spanish corbata de bolo, corbata de bola bolo tie (21st cent. or earlier). This type of necktie apparently developed in the United States; the word is first recorded in commercial contexts, both in forms with final -o and with -a. Compare slightly earlier Slide-A-Tie (1953 or earlier) and also String-a-Long tie (1954 or earlier). Compare also the following slightly earlier use, probably referring to a type of shoelace:1951 Windsor (Ontario) Daily Star 28 Feb. 14 (advt.) Bolo ties 50c, belts 75c, braces $1.00.
Originally and chiefly U.S.
I. Compounds.
1. bolo tie n. a type of necktie consisting of a thin metal-tipped cord secured with an ornamental fastening at the throat.Traditionally associated with the cattle ranching culture of the western United States.
