Frequently attributive or as the second element in compounds, as spritzer bottle, water spritzer, etc.In quot. 1916: a kitchen implement used to pipe or squirt dough, icing, cream, etc. (cf. spritz n. 2, spritz cookie n. at spritz n. Compounds).

Origin: A borrowing from German. Etymon: German Spritzer.
Etymology: < German Spritzer a splash, a (relatively small) amount of a liquid added to a drink, mixture, etc., (in regional use also) a drink consisting of wine mixed with soda water (17th cent. denoting a person who or device which splashes or squirts) < spritzen spritz v. + -er -er suffix1.Use of Spritzer in German to denote a drink consisting of wine mixed with soda water is largely confined to Austria (where it is also called a Gespritzter, a word that denotes various similar mixed drinks in parts of Germany and Switzerland); in Germany this is widely called a Schorle.
A drink consisting of (usually white) wine mixed with soda water or another carbonated drink. Chiefly North American in early use.
