Origin: A borrowing from Dutch. Etymon: Dutch springbok.
Etymology: < South African Dutch springbok (mid 18th cent.; Afrikaans springbok ) < springen to jump, leap (see spring v.1) + bok bok n.
1. A gazelle of South Africa and some neighbouring countries, Antidorcas marsupialis, having long legs and ribbed, lyre-shaped horns, and characterized by a tendency to perform repeated high leaps into the air when excited or disturbed (cf. pronk v.).
