单词 springald
释义

springaldn.

Brit. /ˈsprɪŋld/, U.S. /ˈsprɪŋ(ə)ld/
Forms:

α. Middle English sprynhold, 1500s springalde, 1500s springalte, 1500s springhalde, 1500s springhold, 1500s springolte, 1500s spryngalde, 1500s spryngolde, 1500s–1600s 1800s springold, 1500s–1600s 1800s– springald, 1800s springalt.

β. 1500s springehole, 1500s springhall, 1500s springol, 1500s springoll, 1500s spryngall, 1500s– springal, 1600s springhal, 1700s springle, 1500s–1600s 1800s springall.

Origin: Of uncertain origin. Probably formed within English, by derivation. Etymons: spring v.1, an element of uncertain origin.
Etymology: Origin uncertain; probably a derivative of spring v.1, with a suffix of uncertain origin. With the suffix perhaps compare riggold n., which shows similar variation; influence from springal n. has also been suggested. Apparently attested earlier in personal names, e.g. the given names Springald (1195) and Springoud (1220), and the surnames of Robert Springout (a1246), Emma Springhalt (1272), and Adam Springald (1275); it is also possible that some examples reflect springal n. instead (perhaps originally denoting a soldier operating such a machine).
Now rare (archaic in later use).
A young man; a youth.
