Etymology: < blue adj. + belly n., after blue-bellied adj. (compare blue-bellied adj. 1).
Originally and chiefly U.S. regional (southern). Usually derogatory.
A blue-bellied person (blue-bellied adj. 1), one regarded as low, contemptible, or cowardly; spec. (a) a northerner; (b) a northern soldier, esp. during the American Civil War (1861–5).In sense (b) with reference to the blue uniform of the Union Army; cf. blue n. 2c, greyback n. 2.
