Etymology: Origin unknown. Compare earlier sprat n.1 5.Compare Shelta sprazi sixpence (recorded in 1932 or earlier, also aspra, in the same sense) which is probably related, but the nature of the relationship is uncertain. The English word is first (and primarily) recorded in London and south-eastern England, but later also attested elsewhere (including Ireland), whereas Shelta is spoken by traveller communities, originally in Ireland.
British slang (now rare).
