Etymology: Probably < Italian spiedi, plural of spiedo spit, skewer (a1629; 1348 denoting a type of spear), probably < Middle French espiet spear (c1100 in Old French; French épieu), of Germanic origin.
U.S. regional.
An Italian-American dish consisting of marinated pieces of meat cooked on a skewer, and often served in a roll.
