Etymology: Partly < spirituous adj. + -ity suffix, and partly < spirituose adj. + -ity suffix, after post-classical Latin spirituositas quality of being spiritual (1587), animating force (1612), volatility (1643; the sense ‘state or quality of containing alcohol’ is apparently not attested in Latin until later than in English).Compare French spirituosité (1619, earliest in the sense ‘quality of being spiritual’; the use with reference to alcohol is not paralleled in French until much later than in English: end of the 18th cent.).
