Etymology: < (i) Anglo-Norman spirital, espiritel, espiritiel, Anglo-Norman and Middle French espirital of or relating to the human spirit or soul (10th cent. in Old French), of the nature of spirit, immaterial (10th cent.), concerned with the sacred or divine (12th cent.), and its etymon (ii) post-classical Latin spiritalis of the nature of spirit, immaterial (Vetus Latina), of or relating to the soul or spirit, deriving from the Holy Spirit, concerned with the sacred or divine (Vulgate), of or relating to the spirit in contrast to the body or matter (3rd cent.), connected with breathing, (of a sound or letter) that is pronounced with breathing or aspiration (4th cent.), that has spiritual meaning or significance (early 5th cent. in Jerome), irregularly < classical Latin spīritus spirit n. + -ālis -al suffix1. The more regular formation is shown by spiritualis .
