A metamict borosilicate of rare-earth and other elements (chiefly yttrium and calcium), which is closely related to tritomite and occurs as brownish- or greenish-black grains and irregular masses.

1961 C. Frondel in Canad. Mineralogist VI. 576 Spencite is a new borate-silicate of calcium and yttrium, (Ca,Fe)2(Y,La)3(B3Si4.3Al7)8(O,OH,F,Cl)20... This new mineral was collected by Hugh S. Spence in 1934 from a prospect pit in Cardiff township..and was tentatively identified as thalenite.
1968 I. Kostov Mineral. 319 Spencite, Y3(CeTh)CaBSi2O13, is another member [of the tourmaline group] occurring as black grains.
1973 Canad. Mineralogist 12 71/1 Spencite varies widely in its physical properties and chemical composition.
1976 Mineral. Abstr. XXVII. 246/2 Spencite (tritomite-Y) is described from nepheline syenite pegmatites in the Dugdu and Kadyros Palaeozoic alkaline massifs.
