Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin bonitarius.

Etymology: < post-classical Latin bonitarius (cited only in Greek spelling βονιτάριος , in δεσπότης βονιτάριος natural master (Theophilus 1. 5. 4; compare quot. 1875)), either < classical Latin bonus good (see bonus n.) + -itārius (in e.g. hērēditārius hereditary adj.), or < classical Latin bonitās good quality (see bonity n.) + -ārius -ary suffix¹, in either case with reference to classical Latin in bonīs esse, in bonīs habere to have beneficial possession without formal legal title.
