Origin: Either (i) a borrowing from Swahili, combined with an English element. Or (ii) a borrowing from Swahili. Etymons: Swahili Bongo , flava n.; Swahili Bongo Flava.

Etymology: Either (i) < Swahili Bongo, a nickname for Dar es Salaam, and also (by extension) for Tanzania as a whole (see Bongo n.⁴) + English flava n., or (ii) < Swahili Bongo Flava, Bongo Fleva < the same elements.It is uncertain whether the expression was originally formed in English or Swahili, and it probably emerged in a bilingual context. It is often attributed to the radio DJ Mike Mhagama, who reportedly used Bongo flava in the same English sentence as, and in contrast with, R&B flava (compare R&B flava at flava n.), on his DJ Show in 1996.

A style of music originating in Tanzania, combining elements of American hip-hop with influences from reggae, R&B, Afrobeat, dancehall, and traditional East African forms of popular music such as taarab (taarab n.), and featuring lyrics in Swahili or English.
