Etymology: < the name of the South Downs, an area of chalk downs in southern England, comprising parts of the counties of Sussex and Hampshire < south adj. + the plural of down n.1

1. attributive. Designating a breed of sheep from the South Downs of southern England (see sense 2), and wool and meat from such sheep, as Southdown breed, Southdown ewe, Southdown mutton, Southdown ram, Southdown wool, etc.Quot. 1742 may represent simple geographical use.
