Origin: Formed within English, by compounding; probably modelled on a Latin lexical item. Etymons: actino- comb. form, -phorous comb. form.

Etymology: < actino- comb. form + -phorous comb. form, probably after scientific Latin actinophorus (1799). Compare Greek ἀκτινοϕόρος bearing rays (in an undated glossary), also used as noun in Hellenistic Greek, denoting a rayed shellfish ( > classical Latin actīnophoros (Pliny)). Compare also French actinophore, noun (1816 or earlier) and adjective (1833 or earlier).

Biology. Now disused.

Characterized by radiating projections.
