Etymology: < Italian staffetta small stirrup (1315), instrument or device resembling a stirrup (15th cent.), courier, messenger, herald, office or task of a courier (all early 16th cent.), military scout or group of scouts (19th cent.), relay race, team competing in a relay, substitution in a sports game (20th cent.) < staffa stirrup (late 13th cent.; < a form in a Germanic language cognate with Old English stæpe stirrup: see step n.1) + -etta -ette suffix. Compare estafette n.Compare Middle French staffette courier riding from one stage to another (1596) and German Stafette courier, set of couriers riding in stages (17th cent.), both < Italian. In plural form staffette after the Italian plural form.
