Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French soulagement.
Etymology: < French soulagement (15th cent. or earlier in Middle French) < soulager to relieve (probably ultimately < classical Latin sublevāre subleve v.) + -ment -ment suffix. Compare earlier solagement n., and also solace n.1Compare the following slightly earlier example of use as adverb:1762 L. Solace, relief. Also concrete: something which gives this.Chiefly in French or French-speaking contexts.
