Origin: Apparently a borrowing from French. Etymons: French souz, lace.
Etymology: Apparently < an (unattested) Anglo-Norman compound < souz, suz, suth, south, southe under (see sub- prefix) + lace, las lace n. (compare lace n. 3). Compare south-bailie n. and discussion at that entry.
Architecture. Now historical.
A brace or beam of wood used for support between a rafter and collar beam.
