Origin: Formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: actino- comb. form, -logy comb. form.
Etymology: < actino- comb. form + -logy comb. form. In sense 1 after French actinologie ( H.-M. D. de Blainville Man. d'actinologie (1834). With sense 2 compare German Strahlenlehre (1830 or earlier).
1. Zoology. The branch of zoology concerned with the Actinozoa, a former group that originally comprised the coelenterates along with various other organisms having radial symmetry, and later confined to sea anemones, corals, and comb jellies. Obsolete.
