Etymology: Apparently < Cuban Spanish songo (although this is apparently first attested later: 1990 or earlier) < son son n.² 2 + -go (in go-go adj.³).Songo was developed and popularized by Cuban dance band Los Van Van (lit. ‘The Go-Gos’; founded 1969), and is reputed to have been named in recognition of the blend of musical influences that gave rise to it (compare son n.², go-go adj.³ 2).

A genre of Cuban music incorporating traditional rumba elements into popular dance music, influenced by rock, jazz, and Brazilian music. Also (and in earliest use): the distinctive syncopated rhythm which characterizes this genre.Frequently attributive, as songo beat, songo rhythm, etc.
